Anybody can be placed in a leadership position, but to thrive in that position requires strong leadership skills.
Leadership is a critical component of success in any field and at any level. So, what skills should you focus on developing if you want to lead well?
- Self-Awareness
A good leader must have a clear understanding of their behaviour, actions, and the impact these have on the achievement of goals by the team. Developing an increased self-awareness leads to better self-control and further growth as a leader.
- Empathy
A successful leader should be able to see things from other people’s perspectives and understand their feelings and motivations. This allows them to build stronger relationships and communicate more effectively.
- Communication
Leaders must be able to articulate and communicate their vision and ideas. They need to remember that communication is a two-way thing. Encouraging others to share their opinions and ideas first makes them feel listened to and that they have contributed to the wider debate.
- Decision-Making
Leaders have to be able to make tough decisions, even when there is no clear right or wrong answer. They must also be able to justify their decisions to others and indeed be smart enough to change their mind if more information suggests an alternative route.
- Problem-Solving
Leaders should be able to identify and solve problems quickly. This is as much about scanning the horizon for both internal and external threats, and having a risk plan in place should the worst happen. It’s not about knowing the answer to every possible problem.
- Adaptability
Leaders should be able to adjust their plans and strategies as new information arises. They must also be flexible in their approach and open to new ideas. Fixed thinking doesn’t grow businesses.
- Critical Thinking
Leaders must be able to think critically about complex problems. They must be able to analyze data and make sound decisions. That means accepting that they may not know the answer and that better answers will emerge as better information does.
- Time Management
The best leaders should be able to manage their time effectively and prioritize their tasks. They will also understand the strengths and weaknesses of a team and delegate accordingly. Allowing individuals to thrive and play to their strengths.
- Stress Management
Leaders must be able to manage their stress levels and stay calm under pressure. This is closely linked to resilience. Knowing what takes you from pressure to stress and how to rebalance allows you to become a more resilient leader.
The great thing about all of these skills is that you can develop them as you lead. No leader is expected to be a master of all immediately.
